DPWH to partially open BGC bridge on June 12

Motorists can finally access the Sta. Monica-Lawton Bridge across Pasig River beginning tomorrow, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

In a statement on Friday, Public Works and Highways Sec. Mark Villar said the opening of a major component of the BGC-Ortigas Center Link Road Project is timely to the commemoration of the 123rd anniversary of the proclamation of the Philippine Independence.

“Sta. Monica-Lawton Bridge is a timely Independence Day gift of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to the general public who will be relieved from traffic congestion going in and out of Makati/BGC Taguig and Pasig/Mandaluyong City,” Villar said.

Starting today, the DPWH said that motorists coming from the cities of Pasig and Mandaluyong can reach Kalayaan Avenue in Makati City and BGC in Taguig City in just 12 minutes.

Aside from the construction of the bridge, the P1.79-billion BGC-Ortigas Center Link Road Project also includes the rehabilitation and widening of the 476.58-meter stretch from Brixton (corner Reliance Street) to Fairlane Street and the 232.34-meter BGC 8th Avenue.

Apart from that, it also involves the construction of the 125-meter upward and downward ramps at Kalayaan Avenue Intersection and the construction of Lawton Avenue – Global City Viaduct.

The DPWH said that the viaduct structure traversing Lawton Avenue up to the entrance of BGC is aimed for completion by the last quarter of 2021.

The BGC-Ortigas Center Link Road Project, which intends to decongest EDSA, is one of the big ticket projects under the Duterte administration’s Build, Build, Build program.

The project was designed to reduce around 20 percent of the traffic volume on EDSA and C5 Road.
