LGUs ordered to strictly enforce trike ban on highways

As part of the government’s road clearing operations, Interior Secretary Eduardo Año directed local chief executives to strictly implement the ban on tricycles and pedicabs along national highways.

The Philippine Star reported that the decision came on the heels of reports that tricycles continue to ply national highways.

According to Año, pedicabs and tricycles are prohibited on national roads under Republic Act 4136 the Land Transportation and Traffic Code and a memoranda issued by the Department of Interior and Local Government.

He said that local government units should create their tricycle task force to formulate route plans for tricycles and other three-wheeled vehicles.

Año warned that administrative raps would be filed against erring local government officials.

“It is the responsibility of local chief executives to exact accountability and impose corresponding sanctions against non-supportive or non-compliant local officials and employees,” he said.

Año said that the ban on tricycles and pedicabs is part of President Duterte’ order to clear roads from obstructions. – Emmanuel Tupas
