Bill to penalize PUV drivers on road for 12-plus hours

A congressman is seeking to penalize drivers of public utility vehicles (PUV) who spend more than 12 hours on the road.

Under m House Bill 1768, Deputy Speaker and Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte is proposing to impose a hefty fine on PUV drivers who will be caught working for more than 12 hours within a day.

According to Villafuerte, over fatigue is one of the causes of road crashes in the country especially at night. The congressman claimed that his bill which would instill discipline in drivers and help resolve the prevalence of road crashes.

Aside from drivers, the bill also seeks to penalize operators allowing their employees to get behind the wheel for 12 hours straight without rest or shifting.

Villafuerte explained that bus drivers who spend more than 13 hours going to and from tourists destinations like Camarines Sur have shift partners to ensure that drivers have enough rest while on the road.
