5 killed as AUV, truck collide in Quezon

Five people died while four others were injured after the vehicle they were riding collided with a truck along Maharlika Highway in Barangay Bamban, Gumaca, Quezon on Saturday dawn.

Investigation revealed that the passengers aboard a Toyota Tamaraw FX (WTB 323) were headed to Manila when the driver encroached into the opposite lane, eventually crashing against an oncoming Isuzu truck (070109) around 5:45 a.m.

The driver of the truck, identified as Gerome Melacura Villar, said he attempted to avoid the incoming vehicle but the FX still collided with the truck. According to the investigation, the driver of the FX fell asleep when the incident occurred.

The passengers hurt in the incident were immediately rushed to the Gumaca district hospital for medical treatment. – With Michelle Zoleta/STAR
