Cases of carjacking across the country dropped by 56.81 percent in May, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP).

The PNP Public Information Office said that compared to 44 cases that were recorded in May 2017, only 19 car theft incidents were documented last month, a report from The STAR said.

Police spokesman Col. Bernard Banac attributed the decrease in number to the intensified “manhunt operations operations against carjackers” that operate in the country.

In 2017, police documented 20 incidents of car theft in Metro Manila.

However, there were only eight carjacking cases that were recorded last month, indicating that incidents dropped by 60 percent.

Aside from Metro Manila, car theft incidents were also recorded in Calabarzon, Ilocos, and Cagayan Valley.

Meanwhile, four incidents of car theft were documented in Central Visayas. – With reporting from Emmanuel Tupas/STAR
